Smart nanoparticles:
An emerging paradigm in therapeutics and diagnostics

AMADEus Seminar - Prof. Uma Maheswari Krishnan - Tuesday 15 may 2018 - 05:00 pm - IMS (Bât. A31, Amphi J.P. Dom)

The advent of nanotechnology has resulted in significant improvement in the healthcare sector both on the therapeutic as well as on the diagnostic aspects. The use of nano-dimensional carriers has facilitated site-specific as well as ‘on-demand’ delivery of a diverse range of therapeutics with temporal control. Similarly, use of nano contrast enhancing agents have improved the resolution of MRI and micro-CT images that are widely used for clinical diagnosis. In the field of quantitative diagnosis, use of nano-interfaces in the sensing element have resulted in the emergence of the next generation sensors with rapid response time, high sensitivity and reduced sample volume. Our lab primarily works on harnessing nanoparticles for improved therapeutic and diagnostic outcomes for various diseases including cancer. This talk will focus on our efforts in the fabrication of a ‘smart’ stimuli-responsive nano-carrier for cancer therapy and nano-interfaced electrochemical sensors that were developed in the lab for metabolites that can help in detecting cancer cell proliferation and distinguishing normal and cancer cells.

Uma Maheswari Krishnan is a Professor at the CeNTAB and School of Chemical and Biotechnology, SASTRA Deemed University, India. She received Ph.D. degree in Applied Chemistry from Bharathiar Univ., India in 2000 and has post-doct experience from the Southwestern Medical Centre, Univ. Texas, USA. She received training on thin film processing and clean room processes at Univ. Arkansas, USA. In 2003 she joined as a Lecturer at SASTRA University and is currently the Associate Dean of Bioengineering and Chemistry. Her research interests include smart drug delivery systems, nanobiosensors, electrophysiology, mesoporous materials, nanotoxicology and regenerative medicine. She has over 180 publications in journals and books.
