Self-Assembled Metamaterials

The field of metamaterials emerged at international level in 2000 with theoretical studies and the first experimental realizations of electromagnetic metamaterials in the microwave regime by “top down” lithographic techniques. A strong collaborative research project on metamaterials started in Bordeaux in 2008. The innovative “bottom-up” concept was based on the specific skills of the Bordeaux campus, namely the combination of the chemical approach for the synthesis of nano and micro resonators and self-assembly methods of soft matter physical-chemistry for the fabrication of bulk materials. The AMADEus Self-assembled Metamaterials project is split into three sub-projects which address different fields of applications of metamaterials, namely (1) Optics in the visible range (nanoscale), (2) Electromagnetism in the THz range (micrometer scale) and (3) Acoustics (Micrometer to millimeter range). All three sub-projects are constructed along the same strategy based on complementary tasks, namely synthesis of resonators (meta-atoms), self-assembly of materials, characterization of the targeted properties and demonstration of functions.
